LEARN HOW TO MAKE EASY BABY OVERALLS HOMEMADE WITHOUT A PATTERN. YOU CAN SIMPLY USE A PREVIOUSLY OWNED OUTFIT AS THE “PATTERN.” THIS IDEA CAN BE ADAPTED TO MAKE ANY SIZE OUTFIT FOR A CHILD OR EVEN ADULT SIZED CLOTHES.
In this tutorial, I show you the design behind how I made my son’s first birthday outift without using any specific pattern. I will show you how to trace a previously owned outfit to create a new DIY outfit for your child. This can also be done with adult clothes!
FIrst birthday outfit
This idea came to me when I was searching for a simple outfit for my son’s first birthday. The look I wanted for him was a soft linen look, but could not find the outfit anywhere in stores or online for a price I was willing to pay!
I also am not a fan of “bubble” clothing around the legs of little boy’s clothes, so I sought to make my own pattern for this outfit.

tRACING THE OUTFIT
I used an outfit that my son currently wears and simply traced the front, back, and straps. I did allow for 1/4″ seam allowance when tracing. You can find more details in the video tutorial.
NOT JUST FOR KIDS CLOTHES
I am actually planning to make more outfits for my son, but I am also planning to make some simple dresses and tops for myself. The idea behind tracing a previously owned outfit can very easily be adapted to any work for any outfit: adult or child. Since I can design clothes how I like them, it is easier to “shop” and also MUCH cheaper!
Yes, sewing does require time, which I know everyone does not have an abundance of, but this new little hobby for me has been fun!
I also think it was very special that I got to hand make my son’s first birthday outfit and have those photos that we will cherish forever.
